Basic presentation


Barcelona is unequivocally a Mediterranean city, not only because of its geographic location but also and above all because of its history, tradition and culture. Barcelona is the capital and most populous city of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain, with a population of 1,605,602 in 2006, while the population of the Metropolitan Area was 3,161,081. It is located on the Mediterranean coast (41°23′N, 2°11′E), between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and is limited to the west by the Serra de Collserola ridge (512 m/1,680 ft).

There are two official languages spoken in Barcelona: Catalan, generally spoken in all of Catalonia, and Castillian Spanish. the announcements in many of the shops, public transport, street names Barcelona are in Catalan. It is not common among people the english, you speak only in this language in some tourist sites such as hotels, restaurants, shops, it is appropriate to exert a little Spanish.
